Designed and hand-modeled by Belgian … Read more A compelling mid-century expressionist clay sculpture of a female torso sculpture dating to the 1960s. Designed and hand-modeled by Belgian artist Francis Weingarten (1923–2014), the piece is executed in fired clay with a rich dark patinated surface and presented on a custom hardwood plinth with engraved brass artist plaque. The sculptural form embodies the organic abstraction characteristic of postwar European studio ceramics, with simplified volumes and expressive hand-worked texture lending warmth and presence. Weingarten was a post-war European artist known for his focused study of the human form through hand-sculpted clay, terracotta, and mixed media. The underside of the plinth retains its original mechanical mounting assembly and lacks additional gallery marks, which is consistent with unique studio pieces from this era. The stylized torso and exaggerated curves are reminiscent of forms popularized by British sculptor Henry Moore.
