A fascinating and luminous view of the Roman countryside, dated and signed 1867 by the painter Ettore Cumbo Borgia (Messina, 1833 – Florence, 1899), one of the most appreciated interpreters of Italian landscape painting in the second half of the 19th century.
The work depicts a striking rural scene imbued with the idealized and poetic vision of the Lazio countryside that, since the 18th century, had attracted artists and travellers from all over Europe during the Grand Tour.
A dirt road winds through rocky outcrops and gentle hills, guiding the eye toward the wide mountain horizon that closes the composition. In the foreground, a peasant woman riding a mule follows the path with calm naturalness, while in the distance a shepherd watches over his grazing flock. A thin column of smoke rising among the trees suggests the discreet presence of man, giving the scene a subtle sense of everyday life.
Rather than a topographical depiction, the painting becomes a vision of the Romantic spirit: nature appears harmonious and serene, immersed in a crystalline light that dissolves all harshness of reality and transforms it into memory and poetry.
The quality of the brushwork, the refined atmospheric rendering, and the diffused luminosity are distinctive elements of Ettore Cumbo’s artistic maturity.
Born in Messina but Roman by adoption, Cumbo initially trained under the landscape painter Andrea Castelli. After moving to Florence, where he spent much of his career, he established himself as a painter of landscapes, views, seascapes, and still lifes, receiving important recognition at numerous national and international exhibitions.
In 1893 he was appointed Academician of Merit at the Accademia di San Luca.
His pictorial language, far from the more experimental currents of his time, won over a wide Italian and international clientele thanks to its lyrical sensitivity and extraordinary ability to capture light and atmosphere in the landscape.
