In case you're wondering about the significance of Bucks County, in this year of the U.S.A.'s 250th birthday, Bucks County shines. Although founded in 1682 by William Penn, the Lenni Lenape ("Original People") inhabited the Delaware Valley long before European arrival. However, in 1681, King Charles II granted the land to William Penn (in order to settle a debt owed to Penn's family in England.) Central Bucks County served as George Washington’s base and on a freezing night of Dec 25–26, 1776, his army famously crossed the Delaware River from the county into New Jersey.
Eventually, many artists moved into the area and Bucks County developed its rich legacy of custom, handcrafted woodworking in the early-to-mid 20th century rather than through mass industrialization. The region became an epicenter for master artisans and the American studio craft movement in the 1940s, largely sparked by legendary woodworker George Nakashima, who settled his studio in New Hope to create organic furniture directly celebrating the spirit of the wood.
This piece is priced exceptionally well so as many people as possible have access to beautiful vintage American furniture.
