This exceptional 19th century oversize French Aubusson carpet is a gallery-commanding piece of the highest decorative significance — a room-defining work of French tapestry art in a format rarely found on the market today. The design features a beautifully rendered central oval floral medallion framed by graceful floral sprays, all set on a luminous ivory field of extraordinary purity and light.
A complementary pink border adorned with additional floral motifs of great delicacy frames the composition with a warm elegance that perfectly balances the refined field. Executed in a sophisticated palette of ivory, red, pink, brown, pale green, and soft accent tones, this carpet exemplifies the delicate coloration and masterful craftsmanship of France's celebrated 19th century tapestry ateliers. At nearly 11 by 21 feet, this is a palace and ballroom scale acquisition — one of the largest Aubusson carpets to come to market in recent years. Aubusson — the small town in the Creuse department of central France — has been synonymous with the finest tapestry and carpet weaving in Europe since the 17th century, when royal patronage elevated its ateliers to international renown. Aubusson carpets and tapestries were found in the palaces of Versailles and the grand hôtels of Paris, and their refined floral designs, muted yet luminous color palettes, and flatweave tapestry construction have remained among the most sought-after elements of European decorative art ever since.
