A rare and distinguished large serving spoon by David-Andersen of Oslo, Norway, one of Scandinavia's most celebrated silversmiths, founded 1876 and internationally recognized for guilloche enamelwork.
This piece is uncommon even within the David Andersen catalog. Translucent pale blue guilloche enamel in a diamond and leaf scale pattern covers both the handle and the exterior of the fig-shaped bowl, with the bowl-back enamel radiating from a central point in a full sunburst of the same pattern. This dual-enamel treatment on a large serving spoon format is rare. The interior bowl is finished in rich vermeil. The handle joins the bowl via a distinctive fleur-de-lis bracket collar, terminating at the base with a domed gilt cap and pip finial.
Marks: 925, S, and maker's cartouche stamped at the collar junction, consistent with David-Andersen post-1940 sterling production.
Length: 8.5 inches. Weight: 62.21 grams (2.00 troy oz).
Very good antique condition. One small chip to enamel, shown in photos. Wear to gold wash on terminal cap consistent with age and use. Minor tarnish at silver collar ring at terminal. Enamel panels on both handle and bowl exterior are otherwise intact. Gilt bowl interior displays age-appropriate patina throughout. Neither condition note affects the integrity or display of the piece.
Deaccessioned from a private Pacific Northwest estate via Turner Auctions and Appraisals Spring Fine Estate Auction.
