Modernist landscape oil painting on masonite board by the popular Swedish artist Arne Granhall (1915–2004), titled "Hus vid en park" (House by a Park) Budapest represents a mature example of Granhall’s post-impressionist style.
The piece features a tranquil park scene anchored by a central classical statue standing atop a multi-tiered fountain. A winding path leads the viewer's eye past vibrant, blooming blue flowers toward a series of multi-colored buildings. These buildings are rendered with flattened planes and simplified shapes, a technique often seen in late Impressionist or early Modernist landscapes. Granhall employs a soft yet cheerful palette. Sun-drenched warm tones in the path and buildings are balanced by the cool purples of the cottage roof and the lush greens and blues of the surrounding garden. The artist utilizes thick, expressive brushstrokes to build form, which gives the surface a rich, tactile quality that emphasizes light and shadow, creating a sense of a bright, peaceful afternoon.
Arne Granhall (Sweden, 1915–2004), was a well known Swedish painter and sculptor whose work often focused on quiet urban landscapes. His style frequently captured the serene, everyday beauty of Scandinavian life through a modernist lens. Granhall studied under Otte Sköld and at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and traveled and painted in Southern Europe and North Africa. Granhall is represented at the National museum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, and Växjö Museum as well as multiple private collections throughout Europe.
The painting is signed and dated 83 in the front lower right corner. On the back is the title of the painting in Swedish "Hus vid en park" Budapest which translates to house by a park Budapest. There is also the artist's thumb print in paint on the attached label.
The painting is in very good condition with minimal wear it measures by 23 inches wide by 23 and 1/2 inches high framed to a dimension of 28 and 3/4 inches wide by 29 and 1/4 inches high. The painting is housed in a classic gold tone wood frame with a fabric-textured linen liner, that adds depth and a traditional, gallery-ready finish. The frame is heavy and is in very good to near perfect condition. There is updated hanging hardware on the back along with the Swedish auction tag. This original work would make an excellent addition to a collection of 20th-century European landscapes or serve as a peaceful focal point in any home interior.
I purchased this painting from a Swedish auction house so this is the first time it has been offered for sale in the states.
