A handsome and cohesive pair of equestrian prints after Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851), England’s most celebrated sporting artist of the Regency era — engraved by J. Harris, his most frequent and distinguished collaborator. The two plates, titled “Saddling” and “The Start,” depict the pre-race sequence at the English turf in Alken’s characteristically fluid and energetic style — figures in period dress, thoroughbreds attended by grooms, the electric anticipation of the racecourse rendered with narrative precision.
Alken’s racing and hunting compositions were among the most sought-after sporting prints of the 19th century, and the Alken/Harris pairing is one of the most documented and collectible collaborations in the English sporting print tradition. Prints after their work have been reproduced across generations precisely because the originals are so revered.
Presented in matched mahogany frames with generous cream mats and hunter green, gold and crimson inner liners — framed as a pair and intended to be hung together. A natural fit for a study, a bar room, a stair hall, or any interior that calls for the quiet authority of the English sporting tradition.

You could strip sand and refinish to look brand new if you wanted, but I have left them as is (aside from some light Restor-A-Finish work) to achieve that vintange/antique look. The inside red and gold matting is slightly off on one of the prints but is glued together quite well - to fix would require rematting as you would most definitely ruin some of the matting by taking it apart. You could definitely leave it as is and those with a keen eye may eventually notice up close. Aside from that it is beautiful high quality matting. Artwork itself is in excellent condition. less
