An exceptional, investment-grade piece of authentic 100-year-old French Art Deco history. This is an original full folio sheet, Plate 4 ("Pl. 4"), from the legendary masterwork design portfolio Variations, created by famed French designer, chemist, and artist Édouard Bénédictus (1878–1930). Published in Paris in 1924 by Albert Lévy (Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts), these plates were distributed as loose, un-cropped portfolio sheets intended to serve as luxury design templates for high-end Parisian textile, silk, and wallpaper manufacturers.
The Pochoir Process & Visual Texture
This work was meticulously produced using the historic French pochoir (stencil) process executed by the master printmaker Jean Saudé. Far from a flat lithograph or commercial print, pochoir involves hand-applying vibrant liquid gouache and watercolor pigments through individually hand-cut metal stencils.
Because the paint layers sit on top of the heavy cream wove paper rather than soaking in, the print features a distinct, tactile, embossed-like texture. The dense, velvety color fields possess a rich visual weight that cannot be replicated by modern printing methods.
Subject & Theme
Aesthetic: Stylized Botanical, Floral Fantasy, and Avant-Garde Fabric Geometry.
Composition: A magnificent, explosive center field of stylized tropical foliage, surrounded by dense, repeating borders of abstract cinerarias, poppies, and geometric florals. The palette features saturated teals, midnight blacks, deep purples, and brilliant ochre yellows.

The heavy cream wove paper remains structurally sound with its full, un-trimmed margins intact (approx. 18 ¾” x 14 ½”). As expected with century-old paper, there is minor, even age-toning and a few light, scattered foxing spots predominantly confined to the blank outer margins (see detailed photos, particularly near the bottom typography). The central pochoir artwork fields are exceptionally bright, crisp, and completely free of major stains, water damage, or color fading. The letterpress text remains fully legible. less
