Traveling Man Treasures is selling this late 19th century architectural/decorative corbel featuring a hand-carved oak depiction of the Greek God Atlas. The corbel has been well cared for and is in excellent condition for its age.
The finely detailed Atlas strains, muscles flexed, face tense, arms bent overhead to symbolically carry the weight of the world. The lower section narrows into a decorative scroll, its overall design allowing the piece to sit flush against a vertical surface.
DIMENSIONS: 20.5" H x 6.25" W x 4.75" D
In classical architecture, male structural supports are referred to as Atlantes (the plural form of Atlas). Rather than holding structural weight, this particular carving is a decorative structural element designed to mount onto a wall, beam, or under a shelf or mantelpiece.
