A rare and captivating piece of American amusement history, this antique cast metal carousel horse retains its remarkable original polychrome paint surface — a quality that serious collectors and design-world buyers prize above all else. The crazing, layering, and honest wear you see here is not a flaw; it is the irreplaceable record of decades of working carousel life, and it cannot be reproduced or restored.
The horse is cast in the American portable carousel tradition, consistent with the output of the great North Tonawanda, New York manufacturers of the early-to-mid 20th century — Allan Herschell, Spillman Engineering, and their contemporaries. The hollow cast construction, integral stirrup mounts, and bold simplified modeling of the head and ears are hallmarks of this lineage. No foundry mark is present, which is typical of production horses from this era.
Original paint survives in multiple layers: a dramatic black body with sage green and red chest banding, a mustard gold saddle blanket with powder blue trim, and white hooves. The paint surface shows beautiful crazing and loss consistent with age and authentic working use. This surface is entirely original and has not been touched.
The horse is presented on its period display pole and tripod stand, ready to install in your space exactly as shown. Approximate dimensions: 28” at the shoulder, 27” body length, 42” total height on stand.

A statement piece for the serious collector, the interior designer, or anyone who appreciates the raw poetry of American folk art at its most visceral.
