Joseph Wolins
1915-1999
Wolins was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He studied at the National Academy of Design from 1935 to 1941 under Leon Kroll. He also studied in Europe in and during that time was particularly influenced by the Italian painters Piero della Francesca, Mantegna and Giotto.
The Paris Exposition of 1937 afforded a unique opportunity to study Modern European Painting. Wolins was one of the New York area artists associated with the W.P.A. Art Project, 1935-1941. Considered an "artist's artist," Further trial and experiment in painting for the next five years led to participating in group exhibitions. Wolins had many one man and group shows (the first one-man show was held at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York, in 1947). He also exhibited at the World's Fair and he was the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Wolins' work is held by various museums, including The Smithsonian American Art Museum and is carried by numerous well-known galleries around the United States, including Kennedy Gallery in New York City.
