An exceptionally rare and striking Gladding McBean architectural terra cotta planter finished in a coveted turquoise-blue glaze. This monumental garden vessel features a rectangular form elevated on four classically inspired fluted pedestal legs, with richly molded floral and foliate ornamentation adorning each corner panel. The luminous glaze exhibits the soft variegation and subtle surface texture that collectors prize in early California architectural ceramics.
Measuring an impressive 53 inches wide, 14 1/4 inches deep, and 36 3/4 inches high, the planter offers substantial planting space while maintaining elegant architectural proportions. The interior planting area measures approximately 48 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches deep, making it ideal for displaying seasonal flowers, succulents, herbs, or cascading garden specimens.
Produced by the renowned Gladding McBean company, one of California’s most important makers of architectural terra cotta and garden ornament, this planter reflects the firm’s mastery of both classical design and richly colored ceramic glazes. Its dramatic proportions and elevated form make it equally suited as a garden centerpiece, conservatory planter, fountain surround, or statement interior architectural object.
Examples of glazed Gladding McBean garden pieces survive in far smaller numbers than their unglazed counterparts, and turquoise-glazed examples of this scale and quality are especially difficult to find. The combination of architectural detailing, substantial size, and vibrant California glaze makes this a highly desirable piece for collectors of California pottery, Arts & Crafts gardens, Mediterranean Revival estates, and historic landscape design.
A remarkable opportunity to acquire a museum-worthy example from one of California’s most celebrated ceramic manufacturers.
