This spectacular oil on panel is a copy of the original “Madonna Connestabile” by the Renaissance master Raphael (1502). The original work was painted on oil on panel and later transferred to canvas. It is very likely the last work painted by Raphael in Umbria before moving to Florence, and it shows the influence of Perugino. Its name comes from the Connestabile family of Perugia, from whom it was acquired by Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1871, and is now housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child while reading a book, a detail symbolizing divine wisdom. The Virgin's mantle is blue, her traditional color; beneath it, she wears a crimson dress with an embroidered ribbon, although in this version the colors are more muted than in the original work. Raphael painted the Virgin with a serene face, idealized and, at the same time, meditative, her eyes lowered, gazing tenderly at her son. In the background, a natural landscape with snow-capped mountains.
The pyramidal composition, characteristic of the artist, provides balance and stability and directs the viewer's gaze. The carved and gilded wooden frame has an arched top, reminiscent of the circular form in Raphael's work.
The frame protecting the artwork is offered as a gift but has intrinsic value. It is provided at no additional cost so that when your artwork arrives at your home or destination, it can be displayed immediately. Any damage to the frame itself, which does not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason for filing a claim or requesting a cancellation.
