This exceptional sideboard by Rudolf Glatzel for Fristho demonstrates exactly how powerful tranquility and proportion can be. The design dates from the 1960s and is crafted from warm walnut wood with a distinct architectural structure. The solid, sculptural base literally forms the foundation of the piece. An organically shaped molding runs around it, subtly staggering relative to the cabinet sections. Resting above this are the three separate elements of the sideboard, a recognizable detail in Glatzel's work. This layering gives the piece an almost floating effect. Calm in appearance, yet with great tension in the lines and proportions. On either side are sliding door cabinets, each containing a shelf. In the center, the emphasis lies on the drawers, fitted with beautifully shaped wooden handles that complement the organic lines of the design. The sideboard has been meticulously restored in our workshop. The base has been completely re-glued and stripped of old lacquer layers. The cabinet sections have also been professionally restored, with old maintenance layers removed, the wood carefully sanded, and re-nourished with a durable matte furniture oil. As a result, the warm color nuances and lively grain of the walnut wood are beautifully highlighted once again, without the furniture losing its serene appearance. A characterful piece of Dutch design in which craftsmanship, sculpture, and functionality come together effortlessly.
