A striking example of late 19th century French neoclassical design, this elegant giltwood pareclose mirror dates to the 1880s and was crafted in Paris. Rich in architectural detail and refined ornamentation, the mirror embodies the grandeur of the Louis XVI revival period, with its balanced symmetry, classical motifs, and luminous aged gilding.
The shaped crest features a softly molded serpentine cornice above a delicately carved floral rosette medallion tied with a ribbon bow, from which cascading leaf garlands gracefully drape across the upper panels. The garlands appear to be stylized olive or laurel leaves — a beloved neoclassical motif symbolizing peace, abundance, and triumph. Additional carved pendant drops anchor the swags at either side, creating a beautifully balanced composition.
Framing the mirror is an elegant giltwood molding enriched with an inner border featuring "les perles" (beading that resembles a strand of pearls) next to the antique mirror glass. Artisans used this beading technique as a decorative element on only the grandest pieces with pearls symbolizing power and luxury since only the most wealthy aristocrats could afford them. This inner border lends texture and depth to the overall design. Subtle carved returns and projecting lower side details further enhance its architectural presence.
The original mercury glass is arranged in divided or segmented panels — often referred to as split-glass or pareclose construction — joined by decorative gilt rosettes at the intersections. This sophisticated technique allowed French artisans to create mirrors of dramatic scale while preserving the fragile glass available during the period. The softly foxed mercury plates now display the romantic shimmer and atmospheric haze only genuine antique mirror glass can achieve.
The surface retains a beautifully aged original water-gilded patina, mellowed over more than a century into warm layers of luminous gold with areas of natural wear and soft oxidation. Hints of the rich red bole beneath the gilding subtly emerge throughout the frame — an authentic characteristic of traditional French water gilding and a sign of the mirror’s untouched age and originality. Together with the gentle wear to the mercury plates, the patina gives the piece exceptional depth, warmth, and character impossible to replicate.
Both sculptural and luminous, this exceptional Parisian mirror brings timeless elegance to an entryway, mantel, bedroom, or dining room interior.Dimensions:h - 63"
