This minimalist table & stool set updates a classical Chinese form with the clean lines and geometric motifs of Art Deco design. Dated to the 1930s during China's brief Republic Period (1912-1949), the set provided a surface for playing the qin, an ancient stringed instrument associated with scholarly refinement.
With matching silhouettes, the elegant tables flow as continuous ribbons of black, with waterfall sides perforated with dramatic, full-moon cutouts. A black lacquer finish imparts a soft texture, lightly faded at the edges to reveal warm tones beneath. Subtle details add intrigue to the simple form, such as the concealed dovetail joinery, scrolled feet, and beaded edge tracing the apron and legs. Once used for musical performance, the set is ideal today as a storied desk or bedroom vanity.
