Christ … Read more An antique oil painting on canvas with a period frame depicting Ecce Homo, dating from the early 19th century. Christ is depicted in a three-quarter view to the right, with his head tilted back and his gaze turned upward in search of divine and spiritual connection. In his hands, partially visible in the lower right, he holds diagonally a marsh reed used by Roman soldiers as a mock royal scepter to mock him. The crown of densely woven thorns on his head accentuates the drama of the moment and the physical pain while maintaining a strong ideal and aesthetic composure. The lighting is in the Caravaggio style, emanating from an external source in the upper left and striking Christ’s face and torso diagonally, modeling the muscular forms and creating a sharp chiaroscuro contrast between the darkness of the background and the luminosity of the flesh.
