The sculpture, also known as "The Weight of Thought," depicts Athena in a moment of contemplation, capturing her strength and intelligence. This representation of Athena was originally located on the Acropolis of Athens, a symbol of divine protection over the city. The patrons were Athenian colonists from the island of Lemnos. The statue, which for this reason was called "Lemnia," served as a votive offering to ingratiate the goddess, the "patron saint" of Athens, during the colonization effort. The sculpture's great innovation was Phidias's choice to depict Athena, usually depicted armed and ready for combat, in a non-belligerent posture: standing, dressed in a tunic and cloak, leaning on a spear and holding a helmet in her right hand. The Lemnian Athena thus became a symbol of the supremacy of thought and a monumental transcription of the political power and imperial predominance of the Athenian people. Unfortunately, Phidias's original work has been lost, but its appearance can be reconstructed using several Roman-era stone replicas, particularly the head. The most accurate and faithful of these is the one preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, crafted from Pentelic marble by a Greek sculptor of the Augustan period. Good condition See less
