An elegant Georgian sterling silver soup ladle, hallmarked in London in 1800 and made in the classic Old English pattern.
The ladle has a long tapering handle, rounded terminal and deep circular bowl, giving it generous serving proportions and a refined Georgian silhouette. It is suitable for serving soup, broth or punch, while also offering strong decorative appeal as part of a silver collection.
The handle is engraved with a finely executed armorial crest depicting a bird of prey attacking a serpent. This heraldic detail suggests an original commission for a family of status and adds historical interest to the piece. The design closely relates to the crest associated with the Backhouse family recorded in Fairbairn’s Book of Crests.
The maker’s mark IB may correspond to James Beattie, John Boyer or Joseph Barnard, all working in London around the turn of the 19th century. The ladle combines practical table use with the elegance and restraint associated with Georgian silver.
