A round table with a central base attributable to the rolo manufacture.
it is universally recognized for its extraordinary skill in the art of wood marquetry, and this piece fully embodies its technical and aesthetic characteristics, typically dating back to the second half of the 19th century (the height of the louis-philippe/second empire period).
top analysis
the circular top is the decorative centerpiece of the piece, characterized by a complex geometric and figurative composition of concentric circles:
the central medallion: it depicts the iconic scene of saint george and the dragon. The saint is depicted on horseback, his cloak billowing in the wind, as he pierces the dragon at his mount's feet with his spear. The marquetry demonstrates excellent craftsmanship in the interplay of the wood grain, used to give depth and chiaroscuro to the figure.
the geometric bands: the medallion is enclosed by a series of borders typical of rolo's repertoire:
a first band with a three-dimensional geometric greek key (or meander) motif, creating a strong optical contrast.
a second outer band decorated with a radial "dental" or "diamond point" motif (commonly called a triangular frieze).
the outer edge: the outermost section of the top is veneered in blond walnut burl with radial segments, bordered along the perimeter by a refined two-tone herringbone trim. The thicker edge (the band) features the same workmanship with a slanted comb motif.
the support (stem and base)
the supporting structure follows the typical canons of a tripod table or pedestal table:
the central stem: it is turned and shaped with bulbous and spool elements. The central section features a fine vertical geometric micro-inlay (small squares and fillets), a high-quality detail that distinguishes the most refined pieces from the more mass-produced ones.
the tripod: the base is supported by three legs, curved in a "volute" or "s" shape (louis-philippe style), which ensure stability while elongating the figure. The upper surface of each leg is also embellished with an inlaid reserve that echoes the geometric motifs of the frame.
materials and finish
wood types: main structure in walnut (in its typical warm, blond hue), combined with fruitwood and boxwood to create the chiaroscuro color contrasts of the inlaid decorations.
condition and finish: the table has been polished with shellac, which enhances the luster of the grain and protects the inlay.
dimensions: diameter 69 cm, height 68 cm.
notes on style and authenticity
this model is one of rolo's most sought-after coffee tables. The choice of a historical-religious subject (saint george), combined with the complexity of the three orders of greek frets on the top and the inlay on the base, places it in a medium-high range of rolo production, boasting excellent craftsmanship and a striking decorative impact.
