The pair features seated female figures modelled in white porcelain with gilt highlights. One embraces a stylised dolphin with gilded scales, while the companion figure supports an urn-form candle holder. The graceful drapery, mythological references and balanced proportions reflect the influence of Classical Revival design and the enduring popularity of Louis XVI-inspired decoration during the Victorian period.

One candlestick bears an impressed "S&S" mark together with the model number 159. This mark may be attributable to Sutherland & Sons, a Staffordshire pottery and porcelain manufacturer active during the second half of the 19th century. Although the attribution remains tentative, the overall quality and decorative character are consistent with English porcelain of the period.

The stepped circular bases are accented with gilt bands and provide a strong architectural foundation to the sculptural forms. A threaded fitting within one sconce suggests an historic adaptation for lamp use.

A sophisticated decorative pair offering sculptural interest, Victorian character and strong interior appeal.

Condition

Excellent antique condition. Right candlestick: mark to the top of the sconce. Left candlestick: wear to gilding and a small firing imperfection beside the crown of the head. Minor age-related wear and surface marks consistent with age. No visible cracks or repairs. See less
