The painting depicts three carriages waiting in a Parisian square, transfigured in the artist's Abstract Expressionist style, characterized by a textured use of color, applied primarily with a palette knife, transforming reality into lumpy, chromatically dense forms. The influence of his friend Pierre Bonnard is also evident in the choice of subject matter.

His palette knife painting technique and the use of hues that often veer toward blue place the "joie de vivre" beneath the melancholic existentialist questioning.
