S-chair, designed by tom dixon for cappellini. Italy, 1992
origin italy
period 1992
designer tom dixon (sfax, tunisia, 1959) a self-taught british designer, he moved to england at the age of four. He briefly attended the chelsea school of art, which he left to play bass in the band funkapolitan. After a motorcycle accident, he learned oxyacetylene welding and, beginning in 1983, started creating furniture and sculptures from recycled materials, quickly gaining international recognition. In 1987, he founded the space studio in london, a workshop and showcase for young designers. From the late 1980s onward, he collaborated with cappellini, for whom he created the s-chair, the bird chaise longue, and the pylon chair. The s-chair is now part of the permanent collections of the museum of modern art in new york and the victoria and albert museum in london. In 1998, he became head of design and later creative director at habitat. In 2001, he was awarded the order of the british empire. In 2002, he founded his own brand, tom dixon, specializing in furniture, lighting, and accessories.
