eduard braun was a 20th-century german draftsman, printmaker, and wood engraver. He was born in wetzlar in 1902 and later worked primarily in berlin. Braun became particularly well-known for his expressive drawings and graphic works, which often addressed urban life, social tensions, and marginalized individuals. His works show influences of expressionism and new objectivity.
in the 1920s and 1930s, eduard braun created numerous ink drawings, woodcuts, and paintings depicting scenes from everyday life in berlin. Titles like "friedrichstrasse station," "suburban pub," and "unemployed" illustrate his interest in urban scenes and marginalized figures. His works often appear dark, haunting, and psychologically charged.
in addition to drawings, braun also worked with oil, watercolor, and chalk. His graphic works, in particular, display powerful lines and strong contrasts of light and shadow. Many of his pieces explore loneliness, big-city life, and inner human tensions. This places him among that generation of german artists who artistically processed the social upheavals of the first half of the 20th century.
eduard braun died in berlin in the 1970s or 1980s; sources cite varying years of death.
he studied at the düsseldorf art academy and the studios in munich.
in 1926, he created his first woodcuts and began working as an illustrator.
in 1927, he moved to berlin, where he lived at wormser straße 6a during the 1930s. Braun worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for publications including "der querschnitt," "simplicissimus," "jugend," "ulk," "illustrierte republikanische zeitung," and "velhagen und klasings monatshefte," as well as for magazines published by scherl verlag, such as "der tag" and "die woche," and for the düsseldorf newspapers "phönix" and "neue post."
on september 3, 1932, he married franziska ottilie peppinghaus (born march 17, 1904, in radevormwald, lennep district – date unknown). The marriage ended in divorce on october 30, 1948.
in 1937, his woodcut "trödler" (peddler) was confiscated as "degenerate" from the düsseldorf city art collections.
in 1938, he illustrated the book "alle tage gloria" (berlin: büchergilde gutenberg) by felix riemkasten.
1940-45 military service and russian captivity.
1946 return to berlin. Eduard braun worked (sometimes under the pseudonym "urban") for the newspapers "der telegraf," "kurier," and "nacht-depesche," as well as for the satirical magazines "uylenspiegel" and "insulaner."
in 1946, three of his woodcuts illustrated erich honecker's book "die rolle der freien deutsche jugend im geistigen ringen unserer zeit – rede auf der iv. Tagung des zentralrats der freien deutsche jugend am 28.-30. November 1946 in berlin" (berlin: verlag neues leben).
july 7, 1949: second marriage to edith else luise karlick (january 24, 1908, königsberg, east prussia – october 8, 1984, berlin).
in 1972, "der telegraf" went bankrupt, and braun became unemployed. He subsequently worked as a doorman at a student dormitory.
eduard braun lived at bamberger straße 8 in berlin-charlottenburg.
in 1985, the book "berlin sos. Gedichte, lieder, chansons" (edition handpresse gutsch, 200 copies) was published posthumously, featuring poems by walter mehring and woodcuts by eduard braun.
