A sober antique Japanese wooden chest with an exceptionally aged surface, warm wood grain, and a deep, natural patina.
Dimensions: height 34.5 cm, width 77 cm, depth 38 cm.
This Japanese chest dates from the late Meiji period, around 1900. The construction is simple, pure, and functional, with a loose wooden lid held in place by a traditional sliding and locking system. The exterior shows a beautiful combination of warmly aged wood, darker areas of wear, and an intensely weathered black lid, giving the object a particularly strong character.
Inside, the chest is clean and spacious, suitable for storing textiles, documents, books, or personal objects. At the same time, it works beautifully as a low display piece, pedestal, or quiet base for ceramics, sculpture, plants, or other decorative objects.
The condition is good and consistent with age, with normal signs of use, wear, small irregularities, and old marks in the wood. It is precisely this natural ageing that gives the chest its calm, authentic presence.
An understated yet powerful Japanese object for a minimalist contemporary interior: functional as a storage chest, but equally beautiful as a decorative display piece with history, warmth, and character.
