This example is covered in … Read more A striking and rare orange vuittonite courier trunk by louis vuitton, dating to circa 1900. This example is covered in the distinctive coated canvas known as vuittonite which is an early, durable, waterproof material developed by the house before the widespread adoption of the monogram canvas. Its rich burnt-orange tone gives the trunk a particularly bold and unusual presence.

the trunk is reinforced with dark brown leather trim, protective brass corner mounts, and solid brass locks, including the central stamped lock plate. The exterior retains its original side handles and features a large painted black initial “a” to one end, a traditional travel custom that adds both character and historical charm.

inside, the trunk is lined in its original light canvas with a beautifully quilted and padded lid secured by brass studs designed to cushion contents during transit. The interior label reads louis vuitton, 1 rue scribe, paris – 149 new bond st., london, helping to firmly date the trunk to the turn of the 20th century, when vuitton was supplying an international clientele.

courier trunks such as this were made for active travel and transport, slightly more robust in construction than wardrobe trunks and intended for steamship and rail journeys. The vibrant vuittonite covering makes this example particularly collectible, as far fewer survive compared to the classic monogram models.
