Giuseppe Cappé's Rape of Proserpina, White Porcelain and Gold, 1963, features a structure that develops vertically in a dynamic spiral. At the center, a muscular male figure forcefully lifts a struggling female figure, while at the base, a third, defeated figure accentuates the depth and drama of the scene. The pure white porcelain contrasts elegantly with the pure gold details decorating the drapes, creating an effect of extreme luminosity and luxury. It rests on a molded circular base, also finished in gold with small, pointed reliefs, typical of 18th- and 19th-century decorative sculpture. The work conveys a sense of theatrical energy. Despite the violence of the theme (the abduction), the porcelain execution transforms the drama into an object of pure aesthetic beauty, originally intended to adorn the tables or display cases of the aristocracy. The pose of the male body and the twisting of the woman are very reminiscent of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's famous marble masterpiece, The Rape of Proserpina, of which this sculpture appears to be a smaller-scale "chamber" reinterpretation. It is in good condition, despite the lack of two phalanges on Proserpina's right little finger.
The porcelains of the Lombard artist Giuseppe Cappé (Cittiglio, VA 1921 – Lomagna, LC 2008), recognized as among the most prestigious in the Italian artistic tradition, are inspired by the great masters of Neapolitan Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance art. The artist's brilliance translates into a work that expresses movement, expressiveness, and incredible finesse in detail. This piece has an attribution mark,
