A faun lying on his back, his right leg raised onto his left knee; near his head, a female nude with her hair pinned up and adorned with flowers, seated on a tree stump and holding grapes to the mouth of the reclining figure, that he appears to be trying to reach for. The faun figure is permanently screwed to the base plate, which depicts a forest floor; the female figure is loosely placed on top; Bergmann sign on the underside of the base plate. Excellent and detailed quality of workmanship, as is typical of Viennese bronze art. By: Vienna Bronze Manufactory Bergmann Franz Xaver Bergmann (also: Bergman, 1861–1936) was the owner of the Viennese foundry, which produced numerous patinated and cold-painted oriental, erotic and animal bronze figures, some with human features, as well as bizarre and humorous works of art. Known for his detailed and colorful work and the signature either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartridge or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse order. These characters were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father Franz Bergmann was a professional hunter from Gablonz/Bohemia, who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his father's workshop. Manufactured ca. 1920 Bronze modeling, casting, patinated, gilt and cold painted Dimensions: Height: 7,7 cm / 3.03 in Width: 15,0 cm / 5.90 in Depth: 7,0 cm / 2.75 in Weight: 607 grams / 19.51 troy oz Condition: Very well maintained - signs of wear due to age This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
