The Sciangai was designed in 1973 by the Milanese trio De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi — a folding coat stand whose operating mechanism draws direct inspiration from the Mikado pick-up sticks game. It won the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and entered the permanent collections of MoMA New York, the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, and the Triennale di Milano. It was the first furnishing accessory Zanotta ever presented, marking the brand's expansion beyond seating and into the territory of design objects with sculptural ambition.
Eight solid wood sticks are connected by a single metal joint placed slightly above the midpoint. When opened, the sticks splay outward to form a self-supporting structure of variable circumference; each stick terminates at the top in a shaped notch designed to grip garments and headwear without additional hardware. This example is finished in natural-toned wood — consistent with the warm frassino or acero variants produced through the 1970s and 1980s — with the grain visible beneath a clear lacquer. The metal joint retains its original hardware. Dimensions: 53 × 53 × 157 cm. This piece has an attribution mark,
