A charming and characterful small wall tile — one of the most collectable and approachable formats in roger capron's output. A stylised sun face gazes serenely from the centre of the square, its features rendered in bold black line with the confident, almost naive directness of a master working at ease. The circular face is ringed in yellow, from which radiate alternating black strokes and a scalloped white corona of rays tipped with bobbled points — ebullient, joyful, unmistakably capron. The background is a warm terracotta brown, against which the white and yellow of the sun read with particular freshness and clarity. The glaze has the slight depth and irregularity of hand production — no two tiles from capron's vallauris atelier are ever quite identical. The soleil motif is a symbol of the mediterranean light and warmth that suffused capron's practice in the south of france. These decorative wall tiles, produced to be hung individually or grouped in arrangements, distil that spirit into its most concentrated and accessible form.
