A beautifully decorative vintage Persian-style lacquer qalamdan, or calligraphy pen box, featuring a hand-painted horseback scene across the top. The elongated form has rounded ends, a sliding inner tray, and richly patterned sides with geometric and floral-style decoration.
The top depicts a lively procession of riders on horseback in traditional dress, painted in shades of green, blue, red, cream, black, and brown. The sides feature intricate mosaic-style patterning, giving the piece a wonderful layered decorative look. Though often mistaken for a chopstick box because of its long narrow shape, this form is more commonly associated with Persian qalamdan pen cases used for calligraphy pens.
This piece would make a lovely decorative accent on a desk, bookshelf, coffee table, or writing table. It could also be used to store small keepsakes, calligraphy tools, jewelry, or other slim items.
