This fine antique Federal Period mirror dates to around 1820 and is a wonderful example of the elegance and craftsmanship found in early 19th century American interiors. Federal mirrors of this period were often designed as important decorative accents, bringing light and refinement into parlors, entryways, and bedrooms. This example has a particularly striking presence with its richly figured tiger maple frame, classical architectural form, and original two-panel design.
The frame showcases exceptional tiger maple with a warm, glowing patina and dramatic grain pattern throughout. The design features bold molded cornices, turned column supports, and a wonderful combination of the original looking glass below with the original reverse-painted glass tablet above. The upper panel features delicate hand-painted floral decoration, adding color and artistry that beautifully complements the highly figured maple frame. The survival of both original glass panels makes this an especially appealing example, preserving the character and craftsmanship intended by its maker over 200 years ago.
The mirror is in nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and normal use. The frame retains wonderful surface character and patina, with minor age-related imperfections that add to its charm. The original mirror glass shows the expected silvering loss, spotting, and oxidation often found on early mirrors, giving it the desirable aged appearance collectors appreciate. A beautiful Federal Period piece with great color, craftsmanship, and authenticity.
