The level of draftsmanship is extraordinary -- Ticho built her reputation on precisely this subject, and the density and confidence of the line work here show exactly why she became the defining visual voice of the Jerusalem landscape.

This is an early impression from a limited edition of 150, numbered 9/150 in pencil in the lower left margin and signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right. The print is presented in a handsome black molded wood frame with a linen mat and under glass, and is in excellent apparent condition with a crisp, clean impression.

Anna Ticho (1894-1980) was one of the most significant Israeli artists of the 20th century. Born in Moravia and trained in Vienna, she emigrated to Jerusalem in 1912 and spent the rest of her life there, becoming inseparable from the city she drew obsessively for nearly seven decades. She received the Israel Prize in 1980, the country's highest civilian honor, as well as the Sandberg Prize from the Israel Museum and the Yakir Yerushalayim award. Her home in Jerusalem, Ticho House, was bequeathed to the city and operates today as a branch of the Israel Museum. Her work is held in major museum collections internationally.

The Jerusalem hills were her signature subject, and this lithograph is a fine example of why that subject made her famous.
