An exceptional 18th-century (or early 19th-century) French Provincial buffet from the Louis XV period, having deep architectural hand-carvings with an old textured white-washed finish. Originating from regional France, this large sideboard boasts an impressive visual presence and history.
The front displays deep high-relief hand-carved panels. Each door features a prominent central circular medallion framed by scrolling acanthus leaves, stylized regional foliage, and an elegant repeating arched border. The three top frieze drawers are similarly embellished with continuous carved patterns and retain heavy, ornate cast brass bail pulls. The lower scalloped apron shows beautiful fluid lines and foliate carvings. The piece rests atop elegant short cabriole front legs and heavy straight legs in the rear.
The piece features exceptional indicators of period authenticity. Pulling the drawers reveals massive, widely spaced hand-cut dovetail joints and deep wood oxidation. The reverse features an entirely hand-planed back composed of thick vertical planks anchored with exposed wooden dowel pegs into a heavy mortise-and-tenon framework. Perfect as a dining room sideboard, media console, or anchoring foyer piece.
