This wonderful antique English Edwardian tantalus dates to the early 20th century and is a beautiful example of the refined entertaining pieces popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. A tantalus was designed as both a practical and decorative way to store fine spirits, allowing the bottles to be displayed while the locking mechanism kept the contents secure. Betjemann’s pieces are especially desirable, as the firm was known for producing some of the finest luxury accessories and mechanical designs of the period.
The tantalus features a handsome mahogany frame accented with brass hardware and fitted with three beautifully cut crystal decanters. The bottles showcase brilliant geometric cutting with matching faceted stoppers, creating wonderful sparkle and visual interest. The combination of rich wood, aged brass, and finely cut crystal captures the elegance of Edwardian entertaining and makes this piece a striking addition to a bar, study, dining room, or collection of fine antique accessories.
The tantalus is in nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and normal use. The wood frame retains a warm aged patina with minor surface wear, while the brass shows the mellow character expected from age. The crystal decanters present beautifully with minor signs of use. The original key is no longer present, which is common with antique locking accessories of this age. A classic English Edwardian piece combining craftsmanship, history, and timeless decorative appeal. 12h x 24w x 5d
