The “Dimanche Matin” bed by Christer Schweilz for Pallucco captures a moment in early 1990s European design when furniture moved beyond function and entered a more architectural language. Its silhouette is light and suspended, balancing sculptural presence with a certain restraint. Produced in 1991 in limited numbers, this rare double bed reflects Pallucco’s appetite for experimental forms and technically ambitious production during that period.
Design
Constructed from a steel structure combined with plywood elements, the bed is defined by its flowing headboard wings and low floating profile. The curved wooden forms introduce warmth to the otherwise graphic composition of black lacquered steel tubing and angular supports. A hydraulic mechanical system allows both headboard wings to be raised or lowered independently, transforming the object through movement and adapting the geometry of the bed according to use.
Schweilz approached the piece almost as an industrial prototype, reducing visual weight through slender supports and exposed mechanics. The visible hinges and tension rods are not concealed but integrated into the design, giving the bed an engineered clarity. At the same time, the softly shaped plywood elements counterbalance that technical aspect with an organic rhythm. The contrast between the dark metal frame and the vivid figuring of the cherry veneer creates depth without excess ornament.
Seen from the side, the bed almost appears suspended above the floor. Its proportions and low stance strongly recall the experimental Italian furniture produced at the beginning of the 1990s, when manufacturers such as Pallucco collaborated closely with designers working between art, architecture and industrial design.
A rare and intelligent design that combines movement, material expression and sculptural balance in an understated manner.
Condition
The bed remains in very good vintage condition with minor traces of use and light wear consistent with age. The hydraulic mechanisms function properly and the wooden surfaces retain a warm patina with small marks visible upon close inspection.
