This refined oval tray is an excellent example of British Arts & Crafts metalwork, handcrafted by the renowned artist and … Read more This refined oval tray is an excellent example of British Arts & Crafts metalwork, handcrafted by the renowned artist and designer Hugh Wallis (1871–1943) in the early 20th century at his workshop in Altrincham, Cheshire.
The piece is entirely handmade from heavy-gauge copper, featuring a finely planished (hammered) surface that beautifully catches and reflects the light. The centerpiece showcases a stunning pewter lozenge inlay, detailed with a hand-engraved naturalistic motif depicting a small stylized shrub with heart-shaped leaves and berries.
The raised rim is finished with Wallis's signature chevron border, created by alternating copper and pewter details. The front of the tray clearly displays the artist's stamped "HW" monogram within a square cartridge.
On the reverse, the copper sheet reveals the authentic hand-chased workmanship of the central inlay.
The tray retains its gorgeous original period patina, with warm tones and natural oxidation that attest to its history and authenticity.
