Discovered in Provence, this enchanting pair of French framed prints stopped me in my tracks.
At first glance, I was drawn to the vibrant turquoise frames with their gilt accents and soft celadon matting, but it was the subject matter that made me bring them home.
These aren’t formal portraits or grand historical scenes. They are little moments.
One depicts a mother leaning toward her child in a gesture of tenderness and reassurance beside a classical ewer. In the other, she playfully tips the child backward across her lap, as if they are sharing a joke or game only the two of them understand.
There is something remarkably modern about them.
The scenes are inspired by the Empire period, yet the emotions feel entirely timeless. Looking at them, I couldn’t help thinking that motherhood has changed far less than fashion. The affection, the trust, the quiet intimacy between parent and child are instantly recognizable today.
They feel like pages from a forgotten French storybook.
At some point, someone loved these little images enough to frame them carefully and preserve them for generations. That, perhaps, is what I love most. They were never intended to be important works of art. They were kept because they reminded someone of something precious.
The bright turquoise frames and luminous celadon matting give the pair a freshness that feels surprisingly current, while the imagery itself evokes the grace and romance of early nineteenth-century France. The prints appear to be antique decorative engravings or lithographic illustrations, likely dating to the early twentieth century, housed in their original frames.
Perfect for a nursery, bedroom, powder room, library, or French-inspired gallery wall, they bring warmth, whimsy, and a sense of storytelling wherever they are displayed.
A rare and wonderfully heartfelt decorative pair discovered during my travels through Provence.
Sold together as a set.
