This magnificent 12x14 rug, signed HAMOT, is an exceptional accession to Rug & Kilim's European Collection. It is a prized Savonnerie pile carpet, woven in the Aubusson tradition (knotted-stitch technique) circa 1900. Its commanding presence and luxurious field of color, emblematic of high-end French decorative art, make this piece an extraordinary centerpiece.
On the Design:
This piece is a magnificent, woven poem to 18th-century elegance, defined by its extraordinary, saturated pink background. The core design is a complex study in symmetry, centered by a sophisticated floral medallion/vignette composed of classical acanthus leaves and scrolls. The structure and fluidity of the motifs strongly evoke the lightness and joie de vivre characteristic of the French 18th-century style.
The entire design is a cascade of ornament, incorporating lavish motifs like floral festoons, bees, and gadroons. The strong, vibrant pink field is beautifully tempered by the secondary palette of soft gold, pale blue, and cream, lending the tapestry a painterly quality with nuanced shading. Furthermore, the luxurious knotted-stitch pile enhances the velvety texture of the surface, allowing light and shadow to play across the scrollwork, thus achieving a pronounced three-dimensional effect. This meticulous execution confirms the piece's status as a high-end work of decorative art.
Condition:
This antique Aubusson Savonnerie rug is in fair vintage condition, exhibiting significant color mellowing consistent with its age. The pile is generally low, with areas of wear, discoloration, and subtle imperfections evident throughout the field, all reflective of its long history.
