A fiddler absorbed in playing, the instrument held with the unselfconscious ease of long practice. Talani keeps the composition close, giving the figure most of the picture plane and leaving little room for setting or context. What matters is the gesture: bow arm, instrument, the angle of the head captured in oil on board with the direct, unrevised quality that characterized his best figurative work. The palette is warm, the touch confident, and the board surface gives flesh tones the slightly chalky density that Talani cultivated as his personal response to the fresco tradition. An intimate and accessible Talani in a format suited to smaller spaces. The warm palette and human subject make it at home in a study, living area, or anywhere a single figure painting of quality is needed.
Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity.
