An exceptional early 19th-century marble fireplace surround, dated 1818, executed in richly veined red and black marble with finely detailed neoclassical inlaid decoration.
This architectural antique consists of a complete dismantled surround including mantel shelf, columns, frieze elements, and decorative trim pieces. The contrasting marble inlays feature floral and geometric motifs characteristic of high-style European decorative arts from the late Georgian and early Neoclassical period.
The marble displays striking color variation and natural veining throughout. Photographs show portions of the stone wet to illustrate the depth and richness of color that emerges when polished.
The surround is offered in unrestored condition, retaining its age-related character, original craftsmanship, and historic presence. A carved date of 1818 is present, along with an additional inscription or inventory marking reading "9017."
An impressive statement piece suitable for a historic residence, luxury renovation, architectural salvage collection, interior design project, or decorative installation.

The mantel is offered in disassembled form and appears substantially complete. Marble surfaces retain their original character, with scattered scratches, edge wear, minor chips, soot residue, and areas of surface dullness typical of an architectural element of this age. The stone would benefit from professional cleaning and polishing if a fully restored presentation is desired. Decorative inlaid elements remain present and visually attractive. No major structural breaks were observed during inspection, though buyers should expect typical age-related imperfections, prior repairs, losses, and installation-related wear common to antique marble surrounds. Several components bear historic hand-scribed markings, including dates reading "1818" and "1842," likely associated with fabrication, installation, restoration, or assembly history. Sold as found. Prospective buyers are encouraged to review all photographs carefully and request additional images or measurements as desired. less
