A large-format square, nearly four feet on each side, anchored by a solitary male figure against the open sea. The title names the object the figure carries but the painting is less interested in the object than in the man himself: his posture, the quality of his stillness, the particular weight of standing alone at the water's edge with something in hand. Talani applies the oil in the considered, surface-respecting manner of a fresco painter, building density through layers rather than gesture, giving the board a presence that makes the figure feel genuinely embedded in the scene rather than placed upon it. A major Talani work: large, formally ambitious, and psychologically complex. This work would be a centerpiece acquisition for any serious collector of contemporary Italian figurative painting.
Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity.
