I can't stress what a rare find this is. Hilton Pratt was a well-known and distinguished painter of animals, but Africa was largely unexplored during his lifetime. Pratt died in 1875, less than four years after Stanley uttered his famous greeting "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Most people had never heard of, much less seen a giraffe. This exquisite painting is fresh from a Florida collector's estate. It is in very good to excellent condition with only minor wear to the surface of the painting and the handsome frame, which is of quite a bit newer make than the painting. Buy with confidence. You will love this painting!

Hilton Lark Pratt (1838–1875) was a prominent British 19th-century painter best known for his detailed oil paintings of animals, landscapes, and country estate scenes.
Biography & Family Legacy
Artistic Lineage: He was the son of Henry Lark Pratt (1805–1873), a well-known English painter and porcelain artist.
Identity Shift: His father originally named him Henry Lark Pratt Jr., but he later adopted the name Hilton to establish his own professional identity and avoid market confusion with his father's career. Despite this, their similar subject matters mean their works are still frequently confused by collectors.
Common Artistic Subjects
Game Fowl: He achieved significant recognition for his meticulous depictions of prize fighting cocks, roosters, and Old English Game Fowl (e.g., The Challenge and Set-To).
Domestic Animals: He painted refined sporting and domestic animals, including spaniel dogs and pheasants.
Topographical Landscapes: Like his father, he frequently painted grand English country houses, parklands, and estates, particularly capturing scenes around Staffordshire and Derbyshire.
Portraits & Town Scenes: He occasionally departed from animalier art to paint naturalist winter street scenes and portraits, such as Lady with a Fan.
Market & Public Collections
His paintings are highly collectible. His public historical works are preserved by institutions such as the National Trust for Scotland at Brodick Castle.
