A weathered 19th century Greco-Roman Hellenistic style mythological stone sculpture of a bearded Hermes. The lithe messenger is modeled as a powerful classical male torso with crossed arms, deeply carved hair, stylized facial features, and a draped loincloth. The sculpture stands on a lightly toned marble plinth base measuring over 5 feet tall with carved acanthus accents. The surface retains a weathered and richly aged patinated surface with a rich verdigris toned finish. The expressive face has a severe brow, downcast eyes, and windswept wavy hair. The torso and arms are heavily textured, with layered remnants of old paint, losses, and patina creating the appearance of ancient bronze on the aged stone. The reverse is largely flat and shows old mounting hardware and old repairs. Intricate details still visible through the heavily textured and patinated finish. Well-suited for use as a decorative architectural piece or garden sculpture indoors or outdoors. Provenance: From the Los Angeles estate of Robert Addison Day (American 1943-2023) American businessman, investor, and philanthropist.
