An extraordinary masterpiece of raw power, survival, and gravity-defying physics, this bronze sculpture, "The Buffalo Horse," is after the iconic Western artist Frederic Remington (1861–1909).
This work depicts a life-or-death encounter on the open plains: an enormous buffalo bull goring a hunting horse, sending both the mount and its Native American rider flipping violently into mid-air. It includes Remington's molded artist signature along the top of the bronze terrain base.
The Story & Artistry
Originally modeled by Remington in 1907, The Buffalo Horse represents the absolute pinnacle of his late-career experimentation with fluid motion and structural daring. This piece shifts the lens away from his usual cowboy subjects to honor the incredible bravery and high-stakes peril of a traditional Indigenous buffalo hunt.
The artistry of this composition is nothing short of miraculous. Rather than resting on a flat plain, Remington engineerd a spectacular airborne moment: the horse’s front legs are flung completely upside down, its neck twisted as it is upended by the charge of the massive buffalo. The warrior is thrown entirely clear of the saddle, suspended upside down in mid-air over his horse's flank while desperately gripping the single rein.
Remington achieved a monumental feat of balance here, supported dynamically by just a few points of contact where the beast and horse collide, anchored alongside a fallen hunting lance piercing the ground.
