One of the most intense and dramatic narratives in Western art, exceptional patinated bronze sculpture, "The Wicked Pony" is an exceptional bronze sculpture after the legendary master Frederic Remington (1861–1909).
This highly kinetic work depicts a perilous moment on the range: a cowboy has been thrown to the ground, and his violently bucking horse is violently twisting back over him. The piece includes Remington's molded artist signature along the top of the bronze terrain base.
The Story & Artistry
Originally modeled by Remington in 1898, The Wicked Pony was his third bronze sculpture and stands out as a stark, realistic departure from his celebratory debut piece, The Bronco Buster. In this work, the horse has won the battle of wills.
The artistry lies in its masterful composition of interlocking forces. Remington beautifully captures the sheer mass, straining muscles, and high-stakes danger inherent to frontier life, showing that the taming of the West was often a brutal and unpredictable struggle.
