A rare and authentic 19th-century tilt-top occasional table by the esteemed English firm Jennens & Bettridge, bearing impressed maker's stamps to both the underside of the top and the base.
Expertly crafted in the firm's signature japanned style, the table features a circular black lacquered top decorated with finely detailed gilt Chinoiserie scenes depicting figures in a garden landscape surrounded by birds, bamboo, flowering branches, and exotic foliage. The top is supported by an elegant turned pedestal resting on a tripod base with traces of the original gilt decoration.
Founded in Birmingham in the early 19th century, Jennens & Bettridge gained international acclaim for their luxurious japanned furniture inspired by Chinese and Japanese decorative arts, exhibiting at major Victorian exhibitions and supplying aristocratic and royal clientele.
