19th Century American Copper Running Horse Weathervane on Removable Cast Iron Stand, c. 1880 – Roof or Garden Ready and or can be placed inside the home.
This large and impressive weather vane features a beautifully sculpted full-bodied copper horse captured in full gallop, with a flowing mane and tail. It sits above a complete set of directional arms (N, E, S, W) and a decorative sphere. The piece retains its rich, untouched original verdigris patina — the desirable natural green surface that has developed over 140+ years.
Important Feature: The original 19th-century cast iron stand is fully removable, allowing the weathervane to be used in two ways:
With the stand for dramatic garden, patio, or courtyard display (as shown in the photos on a stone pedestal).
Without the stand, mounted traditionally on a rooftop or cupola — exactly as these were originally intended.
Dimensions:
Overall height with stand: 32 inches depth 16 inches,
Width (horse + directionals): 46 inches stand tripod 12 inches each side
Provenance: Acquired from a private residence in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
A classic example of American folk art from the peak era of weathervane production (likely by a premier New England maker such as J.W. Fiske, Cushing, or similar). This substantial piece makes a bold statement whether used functionally on a roof or as a sculptural garden focal point inside and or outdoors.
Condition: Good original condition. Beautiful natural patina with no repainting or polishing. Minor wear consistent with age and historical outdoor use. The cast iron stand is sturdy and original to the piece.
This is a rare, large-scale, fully functional weathervane that offers incredible versatility for either architectural installation or landscape display and or a focal point inside your home.
A rare, large-scale example that would be the centerpiece of any garden, courtyard, or collection of American architectural antiques. Serious collectors will appreciate the untouched surface and complete original stand.
