Trained from childhood by his father, Jean Pointu, in the family workshop in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, Léon Pointu (1879–1942) belongs to the direct lineage of the Carriès school, whose founding impetus drew from the Western fascination with Far Eastern ceramics presented at world's fairs.
Where Jean had developed controlled drips on simple forms, Léon gave greater prominence to random combinations and contrasting hues—a relationship to the material that was both tactile and visual, where colors applied in flat areas and bold drips took precedence over technical demonstration.
This small serving jug, whose functional shape with a spout and basket handle evokes oriental serving utensils reinterpreted by the workshop, is a direct illustration of this: an ovoid body on a ring foot, two symmetrical side handles and one arched handle—a complex architecture with five added elements. The dense, velvety duck-blue glaze, onto which marbled white-cream and brown-ochre drips flow, illustrates this taste for bold, contrasting tones characteristic of his period of development.
