"ceramico" is not a mere chandelier, but a monumental light installation exploring the fluidity of matter, geometric deconstruction, and the power of visual experimentation. The profound inspiration for this piece is inextricably linked to the legendary emerson, lake & palmer concert at the isle of wight in 1970: a watershed moment of overwhelming energy, where the canons of classical music were disrupted and reinvented by the complex, visionary textures of progressive rock. Italian artist and designer dario nasuti translates this tension into a deeply sensual, sinuous, and organic aesthetic. Nasuti blends over 30 years of high-fashion haute couture draping experience with a radical plastic and pictorial approach, shaping suspended sculptures capable of redesigning space not only through direct light, but also through the dramatic projection of shadows.
the metamorphosis of wool: die-cutting, spheres, and crystallization
the realization of the four sculptural shades requires days of complex, multi-stage manual processing in the artist’s studio in parma, italy:
die-cutting & spherical modeling: starting from large 100% pure wool panels, the artist manually punches geometric holes into the fabric. Subsequently, the panels are kneaded and deeply saturated in a special water-based iron paint. To enforce a round, sinuous geometry, the artist stretches the wet fabric over solid spheres, securing it to generate regular, elegant drapes. Under the tension of the spherical curve, the die-cut holes expand and deform asymmetrically, following the organic movement of the folds.
the vitreous ceramic-effect finish: once the drying process is complete and permanent structural rigidity is achieved (the wool loses its flexible nature, becoming as solid as plastic to the touch), the artist executes a multi-colored finish free-flowing and dissolved by hand with paint thinner. This masterful technique triggers an astonishing vitreous surface glaze, granting the wool the visual essence of glazed ceramics or molten glass. The interior of the shades is meticulously spray-finished in charcoal gray—a functional design choice to absorb side glare and strictly focus the downlight.
lighting engineering & chromatic scenography
the artwork cascades dynamically. Nasuti intentionally selected 4 woven textile cords in 5 different colors for the pendants to disrupt visual monotony and reference the chromatic experimentation of progressive rock. The 40 cm mirrored ceiling canopy features 2 strategically placed recessed led spotlights, operating with dedicated internal transformers: their downward beams illuminate the shades from above, making them shine and emphasizing their brilliant ceramic-effect glaze and three-dimensional texture. Four large pinecone-shaped led bulbs (6w each, 15 cm diameter, 20 cm length) complete the piece, emitting a warm light that pulses from within, escaping from the bottom and through the die-cut perforations to project dynamic lace-like shadows onto surrounding walls.
high-end bespoke customization
while the prototype measures 140 cm in total drop length, true to the brand's tailored philosophy, "ceramico" is produced exclusively made-to-order. The overall length of the cascade, the geometric arrangement of the 4 individual spherical elements, and the color palette of the finish can be fully customized upon request by the collector or architect to seamlessly fit high-end contemporary living spaces, dining rooms, or grand stairwells. Proudly 100% handcrafted in italy.
